Epic Is Extending ‘Fortnite’ Chapter 2 Season 1 By Two Entire Months

I have no idea what on earth is going on over at Epic these days. Yesterday, I wrote an article that wondered if they were kind of taking the entire season of Fortnite off, with minimal updates and barely any communication. Well, today that vacation season is about to get a whole lot longer, and is being extended to be the length of…an entirely new season.

Here’s what Epic said in an extremely short blog post this morning about the extension of Fortnite Chapter 2 Season 1:

“With a new year comes new beginnings! Last year we celebrated 14 Days of Fortnite over the holidays. This year we’ve got even more content for you to unwrap, including new game features, free rewards and a live experience that you won’t want to miss. To prepare for all the new holiday-themed updates, we will be extending Chapter 2’s first season into early February. Get ready for winter!”

Uh yeah, you read that correctly, this season now lasts until February. We only had a couple weeks left in season 1 before this, but now it’s been extended by about two months, which is practically the length of a full season to begin with.

Why would Epic do this instead of just…starting another season and having those game features, rewards and a “live experience” in that season instead?

Well, for one, it means they don’t have to come up with 100 new items for another battle pass, and maybe they’re behind their production schedule for that, so they wanted to just keep the current season going. I have no idea what people who finish their current battle pass in a normal amount of time are supposed to want to do for two more months, but I guess we’ll see.

Keeping this current season also suggests no major changes to the new map as well, as each new season of Fortnite for a long, long time now brings new things to the map. The Chapter 2 map may be all new (well, almost, with a bunch of repeated zones), but it has not started “changing” week to week like we normally see in a season, and a new season being further away means that’s even more time the map is probably going to stay exactly as it is.

Something just feels…wrong over at Epic right now. Maybe they’re just suffering from burnout from the rapid pace of the game over the past year and a half, and they need a break. That’s fine with me, I just wish we knew what was going on instead of them just making these cryptic moves that make little to no sense and are wildly different than what we’ve come to expect from the game. They did release their first batch of patch notes all season today, so maybe they’re going to get back on the communication horse.

What a weird season. And it’s apparently going to stay a weird season for another two whole months.
