Epic Games is taking Fortnite server offline on January 15, to make way for the next Fortnite Chapter 2 patch.
Update 11.40 is now scheduled to land in the early hours of Wednesday morning and will be the first major patch of 2020.
The good news is that we know exactly when servers will be going offline but for now, we don't know how long maintenance might last.
HOW LONG ARE FORTNITE SERVERS DOWN FOR?
Fortnite Server downtime has been scheduled for January 15, to make way for the launch of update 11.40.
Fortnite maintenance is expected to last at least an hour and could last longer depending on how much is being done to the game.
Epic Games has confirmed that Fortnite servers will be down, starting at 9am, GMT, or 4am ET, if you live in the United States.
"Hi, all! v11.40 is tomorrow. Downtime for the patch begins at 4 AM ET (0900 UTC)," a message from Epic Games reads.
"Stay tuned for updates when downtime ends."
For now, we would predict that Fortnite servers will be down for less than three hours, but things can change if problems arise.
WHAT IS IN FORTNITE UPDATE 11.40?
For now, details regarding Fortnite update 11.40 remain very vague and it's hard to say for certain what will be included.
What we do know for certain is that the latest patch will include game fixes and should rid fans of a few annoying bugs.
These will include changes to the Sniper Rifle and editing mode, as they are both listed on the game's Trello board. Other fixes may include Star Wars Legacy entries functioning correctly and Overtime Challenge tracking bus stops.
Epic Games are also expected to make some kind of content change, following such a long stretch of no additions. Fortnite Battle Royale's lifeblood is built on the weekly changes made to the game, helping to keep it fresh.
Sometimes these changes cause further issues but we could see something pop up on January 15. The easiest thing would be to launch a new weapon, a new mode, or something else that proves popular with fans.
Perhaps an expansion to Fortnite Split Screen, bringing the new feature to Nintendo Switch?
This seems unlikely but the good news is that Epic Games are expected to post patch notes following the launch of the new update. There is no guarantee when Fortnite news will be shared but fans will be waiting eagerly to find out what's new.
And we can also expect data miners to start rifling through the latest files to try and find clues for the next events and changes coming to Fortnite Battle Royale.
New Overtime Challenges could be part of that information leaked by data miners, with Epic confirming earlier this month that they had more to share.
"The Chapter 2 Season 1 Overtime Challenges have begun," Epic Games posted last week.
"You may have met the alter egos of Remedy and others, but it appears that more alternative forms exist. Unlock these new forms by completing Overtime Challenges!
"The Week 1 Mission of the Overtime Challenges is available now — complete the Challenges in the Mission to earn special styles."
